What do you need?

What is a stamped concrete patio?

A stamped concrete patio is poured concrete that is coloured and pressed with texture mats while it is still workable. The result can look like slate, flagstone, brick or wood plank, while keeping the strength of a concrete slab.

The process has more steps than a plain pour. The crew places and levels the concrete, adds colour, applies a release agent so the mats do not stick, presses the pattern into the surface, then cleans, cuts joints and seals it once it has cured. Timing is tight, because the pattern has to go in at just the right moment.

People in Vancouver often choose stamped concrete for a back patio, a front entry, a path through a garden or the space beside a hot tub. If you only want a plain, hard-wearing surface, a broom finish is simpler. Our driveway page covers that style.

Is stamped concrete a good choice in Vancouver's wet climate?

It can be, when it is designed for rain. The main concern here is not hard frost. It is a surface that stays wet and slick for much of the year, especially in shade under cedars, firs and covered porches.

Good planning for a wet climate includes:

  • A gentle fall. The patio should slope slightly away from the house so rain does not pool or run toward the foundation.
  • A slip-resistant finish. Some sealers can be slick when wet. A matte sealer with an anti-slip additive, or a lightly textured pattern, gives better grip.
  • Air-entrained concrete. Tiny air bubbles help the slab handle the occasional freeze and thaw.
  • A proper base. Compacted gravel under the slab keeps it from settling when the ground is soaked.

Moss and algae can grow in shaded corners, so a patio that gets little sun needs regular cleaning. We talk through shade and drainage at the site visit, because they affect both the look and the safety of the finished surface.

What changes the price of a stamped concrete patio?

Stamped work costs more than plain concrete because of the colour, tools, extra labour and sealing. These details move the quote the most.

  • Area and shape. Curves, steps and borders take more time than a plain rectangle.
  • Pattern and colour. A single colour with one pattern is simpler than a border, an accent colour or a two-tone antique finish.
  • Site prep. Digging out soft ground, removing an old patio or building up a low spot all add work.
  • Access. Many Vancouver backyards can only be reached through a side gate or from a lane, which may mean wheelbarrows or a pump truck.
  • Slope and drainage. A sloped yard may need steps, a retaining edge or a drain.
  • Sealer. A higher quality sealer lasts longer and protects the colour.

Ask for the pattern, the colour, the sealer type and the base work to be written into the quote, so two quotes can be compared fairly.

Plan on several working days for a typical patio, with the pour and stamping done in one day. Preparation, forming and base work come first. Cleaning, joint cutting and sealing follow after the concrete has cured, which often takes a few days or more, depending on temperature and moisture.

Stamping needs a dry window. Rain during placement can ruin the colour and the pattern, so crews watch the forecast and may move the pour. That is a good sign, not a delay to be upset about. In the wet months, extra drying time may be needed before the sealer goes on, because sealer applied over damp concrete can turn cloudy.

You can usually walk on the patio after a day or two, and furniture goes back after about a week. Heavy items such as a hot tub need more time and the right base, so ask before you schedule them.

How do you care for a stamped patio, and when should you call?

Sweep it often and rinse off leaves, needles and soil, which feed moss. Use mild soap and a soft brush rather than strong acids. A gentle wash in spring and autumn helps in shaded yards. Sealer wears with sun, rain and foot traffic, so many contractors advise resealing every couple of years. Ask what is right for the product used on your patio.

Call when you are planning a new patio, when an old one has faded, or when a plain slab needs a new look. If the surface is cracked or sunken, concrete repair and resurfacing may be a better first step. Our home page gives an overview of everything we quote. When you are ready, send the short form with your yard size and a few photos, and we will arrange a site visit and give you the plan in writing.

Questions about concrete in Vancouver

Is stamped concrete slippery when wet?

It can be, mainly when it is sealed with a glossy product. A matte sealer with an anti-slip additive, or a pattern with real surface texture, gives better grip. In a wet city like Vancouver, ask about slip resistance before you choose the sealer, especially for steps, shaded areas and spots near a hot tub.

Will a stamped patio crack?

All concrete can crack eventually. Good base preparation, reinforcement and control joints placed along the pattern lines reduce the risk and keep any cracking tidy. Hairline cracks are common and often cosmetic. If a crack opens wider or a slab sinks, look at repair options early.

Can stamped concrete go over my old patio?

Sometimes a stamped overlay can go over a sound existing slab, but it is a thinner system and the result depends on the condition of the old concrete. A slab with deep cracks, settlement or drainage problems is usually better removed. A site visit will show whether an overlay is realistic.

How often should a stamped patio be resealed?

Many suppliers suggest resealing every two to three years, though sun, rain, shade and foot traffic all change that. Fading, a dull surface or water no longer beading are signs it is time. Always follow the instructions for the sealer used on your patio.

Can I choose any colour or pattern?

There is a wide range of colours and patterns, and you can see samples before you decide. Lighter colours often show less heat but more moss and dirt. Darker colours hide dirt but can fade. Choose a pattern with some texture if grip matters, and keep the choice in line with your home and garden.
